DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Public Services (DPS) is responsible for the administration and maintenance of local and major streets, storm drains, sanitary sewers, signage, forestry, City parks, water main repair, water meter (repair, exchange, and billing), all City buildings, and all City equipment.

This department also handles, or assists, all City-wide projects in conjunction with maintenance within other City departments.

YARD WASTE INFORMATION

Yard waste pick up begins the first full week of April

Yard waste final collection is the first full week of December. 

It is against City Ordinance to rake or blow fallen leaves into the street. Ordinance will be enforced. 

To dispose of leaves:

  1. Transfer leaves into paper yard-waste bags 
  • Yard-waste bags are preferred by Priority Waste, but not mandatory for pick up
  • Plastic trash bags are not acceptable
  1. Use trash cans (no larger than 32-gallons)
  • Cans must have a yellow compost sticker. Stickers are available at DPS of City Hall.

WEED CUTTING SEASON

The 2025 Weed Cutting Season will begin on May 15, 2026.  Per ordinance 692.02 (b), “If between May 1, 2026 and October 15, 2026, The City finds that any owner, the owner’s agent, resident or occupant has failed to cut, destroy or remove the material and vegetation, the City shall cause such material and vegetation to be cut, destroyed or removed within fifteen days and shall bill the owner therefore at rates established by the Council.”   Also, Per City of Southgate ordinance 694.01, “Every person who owns or inhabits any land within the City shall cut, destroy or remove from such land all grasses and weeds, including noxious and poisonous varieties, growing thereon, whether residential, commercial or industrial property, from April 15 through October 15 of each year, to prevent such weeds from going to seed or blossom, as the case may be, as well as overgrowing the lot, and to prevent dead grass and brush from becoming a fire hazard or health hazard.  The Ordinance Department or its agent shall determine which lots need to be cut and the decision of that office shall be final and conclusive.”
